I bought this camera for my 5 year old because I was scared to death that he was going to destroy my digital camera that he was so fascinated with. This was the perfect solution to my problem. He had this camera for 30 min before he dropped it on some tile, picked it up and continued to take pictures. My camera would have been in multiple pieces if he would have done that. We now have great pictures of the dog, light switches, rocks, plants and of course, the TV. I highly recommend this item. It keeps my son very entertained and it is great to see the world through a child's eyes!

we have 4 children and have had many "kids" cameras and have thrown many out that did not stand up to the abuse. This camera is the best!!! AND its for all ages. We first got a blue one for our 7 year old who LOVES it! Takes great pics and video and you can watch it all on your TV. Then we got the pink one for our 5 year old because she always wanted his. This Christmas we are now buying a new one for the 2 1/2 yr old who takes their cameras ALL the time and actually takes good pics with this camera. It is so easy and very durable and cute. Definetly a tried lasting kid camera!

I recently purchased this for my soon to be 5 year old. When it arrived, I took it out of the package and tested it out to see how it performed, and make sure it worked. I had fun with this toy! The pictures are not superior and are similar to those taken by a camera phone. They are not all that crappy, and this version (Kidizoom Plus) upgrades to 2.0 megapixels and has 5 instead of 3 games! I took the picture at night with only a light on and I could see the picture just fine. Yes it was a little dark compared to an adult camera, but visible and should be more so during the day. It must be remembered that this is a toy, and a quality one...it works just fine, and as a real camera. It is NOT a 10-12 megapixel adult camera, so don't expect it to perform like one. The photo editing stamps are great, they are cute and fun. The games and sound are clear and in color. Yes you must stand still to take a clear picture...the camera is only moving with you. Teach your child to stand still, if they can't then they're not quite ready for the camera yet... simple as that. The toy camera is durable and well-made...I highly recommend it! The only way you will be disappointed is if you compare it to a high-end functioning adult camera; and compared to other children's cameras, this one takes the cake! Unless you have introduced your child to a real adult camera with high megapixel quality, they will not be disappointed either! Knowing my son, I have no doubt this will be his favorite Christmas gift!

Now, I'm going to send one to my 5 yr old niece in San Diego, I know she will love it too...

This is a great, durable camera. My kindergartener loves being able to take his own pictures and see them right away. It is a little tricky for him to take pictures in focus because the photographer needs to remain still for the longer-than-a-5-year-old-can-remain-perfectly-still shutter speed. However, since it is digital, no harm is done; simply delete fuzzy pictures and try again.

This camera was an instant hit with my seven year old with Down syndrome. He was obsessed for the first two days, then just totally attached to taking really random shots and laughing. Now he is better at purposely shooting, but the camera provides tons of entertainment, easily downloads adding even more thrills. Educationally, it's great for fine motor skills and sequencing. It's also almost indestructible and comes with a great company guarantee. I think my husband has as much fun with it as my son does!

Plus I got it on sale for $39.99 with free shipping. Well worth it. Maybe now I can play with her camera, to make up for all those times that she took mine...lol

My son (then five) got this camera for Christmas last year and still loves and uses it. I don't know why some reviewers are saying that it does not use rechargeable batteries because ours does and they last a looooong time (sanyo eneloops Sanyo Eneloop 8 Pack AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries It only takes four, btw). We've never had a problem with them. The camera is easy to figure out. My son was playing with it in a matter of minutes.
As for the picture quality... No, this isn't going to give you the same pictures as a "real" camera. Most kids couldn't care less. Can you superimpose a funny face over your subject with a real camera? You can with this one. ;)
It holds a ton of pictures and video clips. My son took it on our road trip vacation this fall and took a ton of pictures. We downloaded them when we got home. No, we didn't print any of them. But I haven't printed any of mine, either.

So I am a stickler for reading reviews, so I thought I would write one. I bought this camera (in pink) for my 2 1/2 year old daughter for Christmas. She loves it! I always take her gifts out of their boxes, make sure they are put together and have batteries so that they are ready to go for when she unwraps them. Her presents don't look very pretty when they are wrapped, but who cares? There is no waiting for mommy or daddy to open the gift, put it together, find batteries and then figure out how to use the thing. I liked the games and the fact that you can change your pictures. You can add borders or stamps or special effects before or AFTER you take a picture. I love the flash option- it helps take better pictures in hands that cannot hold still. The games are cute- a little too old for my daughter, but she's younger than the recommended age range. The camera is not too big or too heavy that she can't hold it easily, and the binocular-like viewer is nice. She doesn't quite have the coordination yet to use the LCD screen. It has plenty of internal memory (256mb) and can hold a couple hundred photos at the 2mb setting. So if you don't want to spend the extra money on a memory card, it's not necessary. It comes with video cables so that your child can see his/her pictures on the TV and the camera has a cute slide show option. Even at 2 1/2, my daughter has actually taken some pretty good pictures and I love seeing the world from her perspective... even if she uses me as her subject and instructs me to put my arms up, show my feet, stick out my tongue, etc. The camera has been dropped, sat on, left on the floor, kicked, and it still works great. Regular batteries last a long time.

Kids don't stand still and my 3 year old son really doesn't care if his pictures are crystal clear, he just likes taking pictures. I would recommend this one to anyone. There's a ton of different things to do - games, photo editing, movies, and stuff that we haven't even gotten into yet on the computer. It's pretty durable (hasn't broken yet!), pretty easy to use and the double viewfinder is great.

The camera is super durable from dropping in the snow, to leaving in the hot car, to dropping on a stone floor... It keeps on working. This toy is the best and very easy to use. I purchased this for my 7 year old son for Christmas. I had gotten him a Disney videocam, which he loved for the 30 minutes he used it until he dropped it and it broke. This is the replacement and I am delighted with it.
It is a very well designed camera for children. The grips are rubberized and just the right shape for a child's hands. It features dual optical view finders - like the old Viewmaster toys. The LCD screen is clear and easy to see. The buttons are well placed - no accidental pushing of the wrong button. If your child has any computer experience, they can figure out the on-screen photo editing themselves. If not, you will need to show them how to use it once or twice, but it is easy for a child to use. My son loves adding the picture frames and the funny "accessories" to the faces in his pictures. It takes 4 AA batteries - 2 in the bottom of each hand grip.
As mentioned before, it is not a high-res camera, but it is certainly clear enough for your child to learn to take pictures and be pleased with the results. If your child moves, the picture is blurry. If the subject moves, the picture is blurry. (That's the way camera's work! LOL) But it is relatively easy to take a clear picture and the blurry ones are easily deleted. The best feature of this camera is it's ruggedness, in my opinion. It will take being dropped and keep working fine. You can hand it to your child and let them go!

The games and the way that you can add things and manipulate the pictures are a lot of fun too! I was so scared to get this camera for my 4 year old daughter because of the reviews I was reading. I was concerned that it wasn't going to be a 2.0 megapixels and that every photo was going to be bright and blurry. IT IS A 2.0 MEGAPIXEL (there is a setting in the tools to change it to the 0.3 mode). I am impressed with the 2.0 quality!!! Now mind you it is a child's digital camera and like the other person said you shouldn't even think of comparing it to an adult's. My daughter has had it for 24 hours and so far has taken a variety of different quality photos. Some are great and some are blurry. I am using the camera to teach her about photography, so she learns to be conscience of being still while holding the camera and taking a picture. But she is 4 years old and thinks a blurry photo is great!! We have already uploaded the photos she's taken to Facebook and they are fine quality for viewing. It's not really too complicated for her to use even though there are a lot of buttons. If she was 3 yrs. old I'd say she wouldn't be able to figure it out, but she quickly figured out where to find the games mode and has been playing them like crazy!! All she needed was one lesson on what the buttons do and she was on her way competent to use the camera all on her own. I LOVE THIS CAMERA! I am playing with this camera a lot myself because it is tons of fun!! We made my daughter a pirate like the sample photos. I can't believe how much it costs now!!! I got it for $10 or $20 less and it was a great buy compared to the Fisher Price, which had worse reviews than this camera.
Don't be afraid!! BUY THIS CAMERA!! You won't regret it :)
21.) Consider your child's age/needs/wants in a camera before purchasing n leaving a bad review.

This product is wonderful.
First off, let me just say that if you are looking for great picture quality, please look elsewhere (even many adult digital camera's give crappy photo). You have to understand that children in general cannot take a good photo. Their little hands shake, they jump while they press the buttons, and no matter how much you tell them to stay still when taking a picture, the truth is, they won't. THEY R KIDS, what do u expect? The max megapixel is 2.0 and the lowest is 0.3. Make sure it's on the highest.
DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU EXPECT YOUR CHILD TO BE TAKING NIKON QUALITY SHOTS WITH IT. I've own 6 digital camera's in the last 4 years and I can tell you myself that only two of them was worthy of good, quality pictures (my trusty Nikon and my little Lumix :-), so don't expect too much.
AND 36 months should be the BARE minimum for this product. My daughter is 2 months away from 5 and it took her a day to figure out most of the functions. My two year old son will just press any button and turn the dials---and then get very frustrated at why the pics don't come out.
Second, I HAVE A MAC AND A PC. You don't necessary have to have a PC to download the pics or videos. You can take the SD card out of the camera and insert it into any SD card reader (many of us have adult digital camera's or printer's that take the SD CARDs.) SImply plug those into a computer of your choice and WA-LAA! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Of course you will need to do any editing, like adding the frames, funny faces, etc onto the pics before you take the card out since you won't have software to add those.
My daughter loves this camera. SHE LOVES THE VIDEO FUNCTION MORE THAN ANYTHING. She films her little dolls and pretends they are talking to each other and when she watches it, she laughs and laughs until she is just overboard with sillyness. She also loves how she can make funny faces, put frames on the pics, and even have animation through her videos. There r also 4 games on there for them to play. I am so looking forward to our two hour road trip with the camera to keep her busy.
AS FAR AS BATTERIES GO: Yes, it sucks a lot of juice--but that's because they r always playing w/ it. I read reviews of ppl saying it would only last one afternoon but my daughter was able to get almost 3 days worth and she had it on a lot, with the batteries that came with the camera.
YOU CAN BUY DURACELL RECHARGEABLE AA's for this. I already had a bunch that I had bought to use with the leapster's we have. WORKS JUST FINE.
I really wished some ppl really took the time to research this product, read the manual, allowed their kids to play with it more, and try over-the-counter rechargeable batteries before they gave their reviews and low ratings on this product. It's a wonderful product and I wish I had bought it sooner.

23.) Great kid's camera. Rechargeables do work
Reviewed by: Sir John USA
Rating:
There seems to be a lot of confusion in the early reviews for this camera. Keep in mind that VTech released an improved model with true 2.0mp resolution, better video resolution, and an increased number of games in late August of 2009. They did not make a big point of differentiating this new model with retailers so undoubtedly for the first couple of months of the new model's release, customers were possibly getting the old model rather than the new model, at least off the store shelf at the box stores. I don't know how Amazon handles their stock, but it is certainly possible. Some of the reviews you are seeing are people commenting on the old model as they said they had it for quite some time, etc.
Simply, this is by far the best kid's camera on the market. It has the best resolution of these models and the best picture quality. The LCD screen is superior to any others I have seen on kid's models. It is nice and bright and easily legible. My 4 year old received this for Christmas. Its ture that he has a tought time getting pictures that aren't blurry, but that would be the case with just about any camera you would get him becasue he is not capable of holding the camera still at this point. Fortunately, he doesn't seem to care. What really sets this camera apart was the Video mode. It records in QVGA 320x240 at a full speed frame rate so the image is smooth and not choppy. Both my 4 year old and 7 year old have gone crazy with this feature. They are constantly taking videos and the quality is pretty good and the videos come out nice and clear as long as they are not blown up too big. My 4 year old loves playing with the in-camera editing features and both kids have played the built-in games from time to time.
I have to clear up the criticism on the batteries. Digital cameras by nature eat batteries. You are generally lucky to get a couple of hundred shots if you leave your LCD on all the time with an adult digital camera. The LCD on this camera never shuts off. As long as the camera is on, the LCD is on. Even if kids aren't tkaing pictures and video. If the camera is on and they are playing on it, the batteries are going to get used. Try taking your average consumer adult camera and leave the LCD on constantly and you will find that you probably won't get more than about three hours of life out of the batteries. This camera is purposely packaged with short-life batteries that are only meant to run the demo. It says so right on the box. They are the cheap "heavy duty" batteries that you generally see a package of for under a buck at the box stores. If the camera can actually operate with these batteries for any length of time, that should tell you right there that rechargeables will work with this camera. The demo batteries on the one we have lasted through about 120 pictures, 25 videos and several hours of play before being depleted. This is impressive for "heavy duty" batteries. If you are replacing these batteries with more of the same type, rather than alkaline, that may be part of the problem with replacing the batteries so often. Alkalines generally last about three times longer than those heavy duties. If you don't want to keep buying batteries, rechargeables will work. Your average Ni-Mh rechargeables deliver more power than "heavy duty" batteries so if those work, rechargeables should work. To verify, I popped in some generic, old, crapola Ni-Mh 2000mah rechargeable batteries and they worked without any difficulty. Old Ni-Cd rechargeables may cause a problem, but I have none to test and if you still are using Ni-Cd's, its time to buy some new rechargeable batteries. I'm sure if you were to get a set of Eneloop rechargeables for this camera, you will be set for a very long time.

We bought one like this for our son last year (or was it 2 yrs. ago?). He LOVED it and used it all year. Although most people reviewing mention giving this to toddlers, my son was 7 or 8. Not ever having owned a camera, he could care less about the megapixels, etc., but he loved all the special features, the games, and especially the video feature. (We let him kind of learn the camera on his own, so he didn't even discover that feature until a few months down the road.) He was old enough to use the camera on his own, plug it into the TV, and even download onto the computer once I showed him how, but I loved that the camera was durable, because he is not the most careful with things, and despite being dropped, left around on the floor, etc., this camera still works today.
SO... fast forward to this year. My daughter (7) just wants a camera like her brother's. We weren't going to get one at first, but finally gave in. My only "complaint" is that this version is even better! Now my son doesn't want to use his anymore, he wants to use hers! ;) This one saves many more photos on the built-in memory, plus longer videos (a big plus for them). My only fear is that now my son will want another new camera next Christmas so he can keep ahead of his sister. Very, very happy with the V-tech cameras. Never had a problem! Our girls got this camera when they were 3.5 and they were probably a bit young. But once they turned around 4 they began to take a lot of interest in taking photos of beloved stuffed animals etc and loved being able to do it. I put a big memory card in it, and so we don't even bother to download the photos. At 4.5 they also discovered the games on it. The camera is not really great as a camera -- though it has a flash it's very weak, and the low-light performance is pretty terrible, compared to our grown-up point-and-shoots. But who cares? The camera is very nicely built and well-designed, and is sturdy and has rubberized edges so it can take a beating. It takes rechargeable batteries.

There are numerous variations on this same camera, all with different prices, so make sure you look at all of your options before you commit. It seemed like the all had most of the same features, but some of them were up to $20 more than others. I was just at Toys-r-us in our area and this camera was priced at $60.00, so this was a great buy via Amazon. We got this camera for our two year old (32 months) for Christmas, actually the pink version. She LOVES it. It is exactly what she wanted. Sure, the pictures aren't great-but 90% of them are of the floor. In her mind, she is taking pictures just like mommy-which is what she wanted. She poses her baby dolls and takes pictures of us, her friends and her parents. This camera seems to be quite durable, spends a significant amount of time on the floor, and survived a bunch of banging at the courtesy of our 14month old friend. Battery life appears decent, especially since is still has the manufacturer batteries, I tooled around with it before giving it to DD, and she has been playing for a few days-forgetting to turn it off almost every time. We don't play any video games, or take video with it though.
My only 'complaint' would be that it does too much for a three year old, but our daughter is at the bottom of the age bracket. BONUS-it is actually 2.0 Megapixels, and I thought is was only 0.3. Read a lot of reviews before purchasing and that was one big complaint of others.
Summary-it does exactly what we wanted-takes a beating, survives, and our little girl can 'take picture'.

We got this camera for out 3 y.o. for Christmas, we had an older Fisher Price one but it din't always work anymore. This camera is better quality than the FP one, way better picture quality and does videos but it is really complex. It has 6 different settings which can be difficult for a young child to understand. She loves to take pictures but has a hard time finding them on playback, plus the process to delete is 3 steps. Also, you have to be able to read one several screens, which a 3 y.o. can't do.
We have a 6 y.o. too, she loves it as well and understands it better. The manufactors age range is 3-9, I would say it is much shorter, maybe 4-7. I think a kid older than 7 would be disappointed with the dismal picture qulity and may do better with an inexpensive, real digital.

The CD-ROM includes the kid-friendly Photo Editor software for a PC but not for Mac. So it directs you to download the software from their website [...]. Fine, except that the website says that the Mac version hasn't been released! Try explaining that to your child.
In frustration, you can try to use a photo editor that isn't designed for kids, such as iPhoto. But when connecting this camera to a Mac, it is not recognized as a digital camera, so iPhoto will not launch to import the photos. Very sloppy and more evidence that support for the Mac platform is a question mark. Instead you must open iPhoto yourself, click File->Import To Library, then pick the "Vtech 733" device. Not intuitive at all, especially for a child. (An additional complication: if you use parental controls with Mac's Simple Finder, then "Vtech 733" icon won't appear on the desktop, so it cannot be dragged to the trash to eject it. So you have to click the eject button from inside iPhoto.)
I purchased the pink version from Amazon for my four-year-old daughter. On a positive note, the frustration-free packaging was wonderful! The camera works just great as a standalone toy, and she loves taking pictures with it, even if the pictures are usually a little blurry. Hopefully with time she will learn to hold still.

I bought two of these cameras for my boys, 8 and 6. The 8 year old hasn't seemed too interested in it. The six year old really likes it. And as luck would have it, I've had problems with the 6 year olds. I already exchanged it once because it was switching into picture mode while he was playing games. The second one they sent me also has problems with the mode switching mechanism. There is a delay between the time we switch the dial and the time the camera actually switches into that mode. Not really a big deal except that sometimes it just gets stuck in one mode and won't switch to the next mode at all until we turn the camera off and back on. When it's working correctly, this camera is a good, fun toy and my kids have fun taking pictures and making movies. The games are pretty basic, but they still seem to enjoy playing them. However, we have experienced minor technical difficulties with two of the three that we've had, so you might want to be aware. It' not necessarily a deal-breaker but good to know.

I purchased this camera as a Christmas present for a six year old. Before wrapping it, I tried its various functions and was unable to get the camera to connect to either of two Macs, both with OS 4 or above. The camera is advertised as being Mac compatible and that it comes with a "CD-Rom with Kidizoom Plus Photo Editor software." But, it turns out this is only for those with Windows. Mac users are directed to the V-tech website to download the software. However, the only software available is for Windows. I called V-tech customer service and was promised they would be back in touch, as soon as they could find a Mac computer to test my assertions. Not hearing back, I called after several days and only after speaking to a supervisor was the issue actually referred to their IT section. I was again promised a call back. A week went by and I called again. Sure enough, I was correct and, in fact, V-tech had no Mac compatible software, but it would be available in 2010! The rep didn't know when in 2010 and couldn't find anyone who did. The website now promises it will be ready in January.
I hope Amazon is concerned about this flagrant misrepresentation.

Silly me. I thought what fun it would be to see things from my son's point of view! With a $60 price tag and good reviews I thought my son would actually be able to take *pictures* with this toy. But, it really is just a toy. Pictures sort of show up but the flash is so weak you can't make them out indoors and if you try to take a picture in the bright light outdoors all you get is whiteness. Also it is too slow to take pictures of anything moving, which makes it bad for a 5 year old who can't stand still. He still likes to *play* with the camera but if you are hoping to catch something from your budding young artist you would want to save your money on this camera to buy a cheap point n shot and replace it if he breaks it. How hard would it be to actually put a decent camera into a kid proof package? As he is going into kindergarten, our summer project is to make an ABC Book with photos he takes. Before you purchase this camera, please see Mary Muldoon's review, "Important Facts for Everyone and for Mac Users," March 23, 2009" (listed under the three star reviews of the Vtech Kidizoom Plus PINK Digital Camera). Her review is technical, but describes exactly why you will not be able to download pictures to your Mac computer, saving any photos your child takes. I almost made the mistake of thinking my child (age 2 1/2) was too young to care about saving pictures, until I saw her at a playdate recently where she played with a toy camera much like this one and wanted to see the picture again at home!
We did get a chance to use a Vtech Kidizoom Plus Digital Camera that was a couple of months old, and in terrific condition. The picture quality was lousy, as the reviews here state: so bright we couldn't see the object she had taken a picture of, and I tried with the same results. When you use two fingers to cover the flash, there's some improvement, with less bright white and a blurred person that you won't see enough features to recognize, or a blurry blob where an object should be. Disappointing. Hope this helps!
