I bought this for my one yr old's birthday- he was already riding on his 3 yr old sister's old push car, and I thought he would certainly get good use out of it in a few months. It is a great hit with him as well as with his sister. He doesnt get the wiggle motion yet, but will push it with his feet, and I can ride on the back with him on the front and we ride all through and around the house. My Daughter, never stops riding it, and this has helped explain the concept of sharing as she cannot resist a ride on the car in exchange for him using one of her toys. I am very impressed with the mechanism, the sturdyness of the car and how well it manoeuvres. I would recommend it to anyone with children between the ages of 1(if you are prepared to ride on it with them) and 8(I have seen our friends children have great fun with this). Best toy I have bought thus far! I suspect I will soon need to get another for my daughter to have her own.

3.) A real blast even at this price!
Reviewed by: stewcanoe Wheelersburg, OH
Rating:
This toy is just plain fun. Even for your kids! In fact you might have to get them one as well! It started when we ordered a couple for our two grandkids. Both boys. One barely walking and the other a 4 year old that doesn't know the meaning of walk. Once we got these put together we saw how much fun they were we had to find a reason to order more, so we decided our niece and nephew needed them as well.

The specifics:
1. The toy is easy to put together. All you need is a hard rubber mallet (a block of wood and a claw hammer works just as well), and a Philips screwdriver. (You will not need to put in any screws but you will need the screwdriver with the included socket tool to help you tighten the nut on the steering shaft). There is a good video on YouTube about how easy it is to put together.
2. The toy is sturdy. Check out some of the plasma car race video's on YouTube to see how sturdy this toy is. (In no way do I suggest this is the way to treat the toy, but the videos are entertaining.) In any case they state the toy can handle up to 200 lbs on a smooth surface. I can personally testify that it will handle a bit more than that with no problem. (Hey Plasma Car! How about a bigger model made for us full size 50 year old adult frame types. I am at a significant disadvantage when sidewalk racing because of the cramped posture I must assume when competing!)
3. The toy is fast enough for any toddler, and on a downhill slope can be a real thrill. Toddlers will find it fun and they figure out how to make it move without any instruction. They can also paddle it around with their feet as well. Believe me, they will make it move plenty fast with just a little practice.
4. The toy is expensive but consider that if they start at 4 years old they could ride it for 10 years or more. So it only comes out to about five or six dollars a year. How many toys can you say that about?
5. No motor. No fuel. No batteries. You might think that means no fun. But not so! Certainly it's not as fast as a dirt bike. But watching my 18 year old daughter cruise around the house made me realize that fun riding toys don't necessarily need motors. And since we won't let her ride the dirt bike indoors, (or even her bicycle for that matter) this becomes a fun alternative.
6. Quiet. Except for the giggles and squeals.

If you read other reviews you will see a couple of disappointed reviewers. As for being hard to put together, the ones we received went together easily. You will need a hammer of some sort, and some tool like a screwdriver to turn the socket tool but that is all. Fast and easy to put together. As to being slow, well it can be. It can also go fairly quickly. It's all in how you work the handles back and forth. Really, check out the videos on YouTube.
I think kids of any age will really like the Plasma Car. I highly recommend this product.

I bought 2 Plasmacars for my lower body disabled grandkids, ages 4 & 6 for Christmas. Putting them together required a hammer and intelligence but was essentially very straightforward. They are portable, easily used and very much enjoyed by my girl and boy grandkids. They are unable to use their feet so need to use their hands for locomotion, this was perfect for their needs. Plasmacars are also large and sturdy enough so that the bigger kids in the family can also easily use them without destroying them with their larger size. So far they are durable enough to withstand active children, including 3 large boys at play. Grandma Marilyn

This was the best purchase of this Christmas season. The car is
amazing! It easily supports this 140 pound body and is so much fun.
It is advertised as being able to hold up to 250 pounds but in the
manual you are informed that a 250 pound person can only ride it on
smooth surfaces; 120 pounds is the top weight on rough surfaces. We
have ours down in the basement as it performs best on the smooth cement
floor. The kids and their friends are still enjoying it even 3 weeks
after Christmas unlike the robosapien and roboraptor which are languishing
in a dark corner somewhere. The movement of the plasmacar reminds me of the bumpercar ride at the fair. It moves forward and backward quickly allowing the driver to make tight turns with no problem. This product is tons of fun for children and adults with a little time on their hands!

We love love love our plasma cars! I paid a lot more than they sell for now, but I certainly don't regret it. Very few toys stick around our house for too long because the kids outgrow them, get bored with them, or they fall apart. But I anticipate having our plasma cars for many more years before any of those things happen. So far, we've had them for almost 2 years. My children are now almost 4 and 8 years old and use their cars daily. We have laminate wood floor that are very smooth and they cars work perfectly on those floors. In our kitchen where the floor is vinyl, the car is a bit sluggish. We took the car to the park once and it did okay on the sidewalks, but it wasn't good enough to bother ever taking it again. If you have very smooth floors, this is an awesome toy. Otherwise, you should just pass on this one because it just doesn't work well on anything but really smooth surfaces.

I originally purchased two plasmacars for my 6 and 8-year old boys, and a ride-on toy 4-wheeler for my 18-month old. The older boys love them and the 18-month old wouldn't touch his ride-on toy after getting on the plasmacar. He pushes it with his feet instead of using the steering wheel to move it, but it's so smooth that he can go quickly but safely. Since the first purchase, I bought TWO more because my 4-year old girl loves it as well. So far they seem very rugged to have withstood my 10 and 11-year old boys' rough play with them. She is now 4.5 years old and still rides this car EVERY DAY, at least once....she likes to sit on it and watch tv, and roll back and forth. Great sensory feedback. Great activity for her also. We have hardwood floors/tile/and some rug. definitely performs better on the hardwood, good on the tile, but noisy; and ok on the rug. she can only push it with her feet on the rug, but on smooth surfaces, she has mastered the rocking of the hands. We just giggle at her all the time when she is riding it, it does go fast so please be aware, but she is just so darn cute on it and the way they rock their arms to make it go is priceless!!! Reviewed by: Triplet mama Kansas

My triplet boys each got a plasma car for Christmas last year, then age 2. By far the most fun toy (and most time spent) my boys ever experienced. On those cold inside days when aggression levels need deflating, these cars do it! Sometimes one might ride around a brother or stuffed animal in back (or even a mom or dad--they hold a ton of weight!) but a good fast race around the dining room table with all 3 cars in action is always fun. And the boys have grown more creative with them: linking them together to make a tractor trailer or a 3-car choo-choo train, with all 3 riding a car. My boys have gotten very good at steering, so can circle away from walls and doors on a dime (just when I think they are surely heading to smash up a door!) and they are getting down the physics of movement on these things too, although they still have tons of fun pushing off with their feet. My only word of caution: they're loud with 3 of them racing through our house and they are wreaking havoc on our wood floors (soft wood) and the finish is stripping away at alarming rates. But we have come to terms with our loss and think that the cars are worth it. After a year of heavy hard use, one of our front wheels is missing, although the car still works fine. But forget it if you don't have a decent expanse of tile or wood floors (or don't want cars in the house) or plenty of smooth concrete in your yard.

My two year old son loves this. We take him to the local park where there's a nice smooth basketball court.

He got it straight away. After showing him how to waggle the wheel, "make the wheel like a butterfly" (so he'd go forwards, not backward!) and "keep your feet up" was the only advice I had to give him. The only problem is that he doesn't understand why his other ride-on toys don't move forward when you waggle the wheel!

Sometimes, we like to ride the thing together, much to the distress of my wife and our rabbits. I'm regretting ever giving him it because he won't let me ride it on my own. Boy, am I in for trouble if I try to sneak a go!

With regard to the choke hazard warning, that's just alarmist claptrap. The steering wheel cap is securely attached, and difficult to remove with a flatblade screwdriver; never mind a two year old's toenails.

Note also that the product photos show a child leaning back on the thing. Evidently not a fan of actually going anywhere. You have to lean forward to make it move, unless you have *very* heavy shoes.

It works smoothly on the flooring and my son can make some tight turns on it and really get around the house on it after only a week of using it. For the first week he used his feet on the floor to push it around even though I kept trying to explain to him to just turn the wheel. Suddenly he figured it out and is quite proud of himself. The same night he also figured out how to back it up to make a tight turn. The only hazard I can see is sometimes if he leans over too far during a turn he can tip over and fall off but he is hardly moving fast enough to hurt himself just going down a hallway. I'd keep an eye on younger children using it outside as they can get up some speed if the surface is smooth enough, but overall a fun, battery-free car.

Well, I must say they have learned quite well how to navigate them in the house and are having a blast everyday riding them. They are even fun for the adults too!!! They are so easy to turn and our 2 year old figured out how to make it roll the first day.

I put the plasma cars together in a few minutes. The kids don't get themk until Christmans. I was surprised at how sturdy they seem. The steering column is steel and locks into big ballbearing races on top and on the bottom. All in all, they look to be worth the money.

66.) Great toy but do not leave it outside
Reviewed by: J. Evans Los Angeles, CA

We have had our PlasmaCar for about a year and a half and i just discovered it no longer works. we typically leave it outside and this past winter did it in. there are metal parts where the steering wheel and the wheels in front meet and they rusted over completely and we can no longer turn the wheel. I wish i would have known that before i left it outside in the harsh weather(i live in california, so my harsh is very mild to some of you)

Overall the toy was a great investment. my son rode on it almost everyday during the summer and even my 14 month old was able to figure out how it worked by watching us and she could go a little ways on it. I used to ride it myself w/her in front of me and i am 5'3". so the age range is vast. This toy is great for any kid in my opinion but just dont leave it in wet weather.

69.) My boys like it.

We are pleased with this toy. My boys are 5 and 3 and both seem to enjoy it. I wouldn't say they "love" it, but they do like it. It is fairly well made. It works great at our house because we have a large unfinished area in our basement with a concrete floor - perfect for the plasma car. I do agree with other reviewers that it would not work outside. Not sure what this means for people who don't have a large flat indoor surface. If my basement wasn't unfinished I would not have made this purchase because there wouldn't be anywhere for them to drive it.

Bought a Plasma Car for my 7 yr old niece. She and her brother (age 11) and two cousins (ages 5 and 10) have ridden it everyday for at least 2-4 hours a day...OMG, they love it and so do I. I actually got on it and it is pretty darn sturdy (I weigh somewhere b/t 125-127 (: ) I suggest that kids should wear helmets if they are riding down hills etc. My niece is a little daredevil and while riding downhill pretty fast, she took a spill. She was fine, but the point is kids are kids and safety is the last thing on their minds. Anyway, the Plasma Car...awesome! I'd recommend it to anyone.

Both my eight year old daughter and eleven year old son have plasma cars and absolutely love them. The only down side is that the wheels tear up a fair bit if the kids ride them on the road (where it is a liitle rough), and they have a tendency to drag their feet to stop which results in holes in the shoes! Fair to say the plasma car holds up better than the shoes but the kids would definately say it's worth it!

My 6 year old 65 lb child seems a bit too big for this car but she does like it. Unfortunately she can only use it in the house on our tile. We tried it outside and it doesn't work well on sidewalks or roads (on a cul de sac.) The companys video on their website shows a lot of children on these cars in a real GYM! Yes, that would be nice but where can you find a gym! Nowhere that I have seen - as a matter of fact gyms usually do not allow wheeled toys in them. Another problem is that the front wheel alignment is constantly needing to be re-aligned. Overall, kids do like this but I would change the age range from approx 3-7 and you really need a large tile or hardwood floor area in your home (unless you know someone who happens to own a gym!)

80.) Great design, poor materials
Reviewed by: Yimmie Los Angeles
Rating:
This is a wonderful toy for 3-5 year olds. Our 9 yrs old niece (70 lbs) visited and tried to use it on pretty smooth asphalt and it really wore down the wheels. Now when the smaller kids use it, they say it doesn't work as well anymore. The product desc says max weight is 220 lbs but don't expect it to work well beyond 50 lbs (unless you have hardwood floors or linoleum.) We use it on asphalt or cement sidewalks and it works ok for the little ones. It's disappointing, considering the design is innovative and yet the materials couldn't hold up.

81.) Great, fun car but steering handle doesn't stay screwed!
Reviewed by: MammaMo Big D, Texas
Rating:
What a pain to have this awesome car but only to be able to use it for a few rides before the steering handle comes unscrewed rendering the car useless. This is a design flaw that needs to be addressed. No matter the size of child riding the PlasmaCar, it continues to come unscrewed, therefore, leaving the car undriveable since it's the steering mechanism that actually makes it go.

82.) Fun, but extremely difficult to assemble
Reviewed by: Laura B. Lowell, MA

My daughter loved playing with this car at a friend's house, so I decided to get one for her for this Christmas (at $40 for the blue/red, it was a great price). My only caveat is that the car was extremely difficult to assemble, even though there are only 3 or 4 steps. I might also question the durability, as it is mostly made from plastic--even the wheels! I talked to other people who had purchased the plasmacar from other retailers, and theirs were shipped already assembled. The extra cost buying somewhere else would be worth it in my opinion, since it took me well over an hour to get the car together correctly. Now to see if it works!!

Oh, and the plastic pieces were scuffed when I removed it from the box, so it doesn't have that "brand new" look, which was also disappointing.

85.) Pure Chinese Junk
Reviewed by: Chinook Redmond, WA USA
Rating:
I returned this today to Amazon. The manual indicates that Plasmacar is not recommended for use on hardwood and laminated floors (it leaves scratch marks) and it is dog slow on carpet, concrete and asphalt surfaces. It begs the question what surface it is designed for then? Mars, perhaps.

Typical low quality Chinese manufacturing. Once assembled, wheels cannot be removed so I had to curse its Canadian maker/designer even when packing it for return as it could not fit in the box it came in.

Do your child a favour and buy her a book instead. For a child, nothing is worse than a disappointing toy and Chinese-made toys are reliably so.
